CYA
July 1, 2008
I lost my last summer job since my opinions did not reflect those of the company I intended to work for. Interestingly, I expressed those same concerns before accepting the job offer but made sure to imply that I would set my personal beliefs aside for the greater good. It’s a fine line you walk when you don’t hold the belief of a certain group but are willing to still work for them.
Starting up Herodotus The Histories earlier today reminded me of one of his more famous quotes from book one.
“A man always believes his eyes better than his ears”
I suppose the company, once seeing some of my writings with their own eyes, thought me to be a personnel liability. Fortunately, that led to a summer of long hours at my universities main library and plenty of time to travel. While the company had every right to not hire me, I find it a shame to do so just out of ideological differences especially with my willingness to set those aside. No surprise that Atheism is moving towards a more militant approach.
A lawyer who I was an intern for once told me, “Cover your ass Glenn! Cover your fucking ass!”
So here is to CYA
