Don’t Be a Millerite…Seriously
July 4, 2008
In the year of 1844 William Miller and his follows believed they had found the day that Christ would return, October 22, 1844. A great fever swept the this Millerites and the rush of new converts and unrest grew across the united states. Believers sold their possessions, lived in community like shelters, held massive revivals and did all they could for the preperation of Christ return. On the the day of the return many went to the high places, but as we know they were left behind. For Christ never came.
Christ return, the rapture, has been at the forefront of many American Evangelical messages. There have been many theological debates from believers to scholars, while none can come up with an agreeable theology. Dispensational Theology tends to be the dominant view in America today. While no one is denying the plausibility of the rapture, I’m just asking for a healthy dose of skepticism to all apocalyptic and proto-apocalyptic writings. Be they religious or not.
While it’s interesting to read about speculation of the end of the world, lets be realistic. No one know. Attempt to understand the known unknowns and go from there. Just understand the unknown unknowns are usually the actions that are going to rock your world. Literally. If we can avoid nuclear warfare (so far) we can handle Peak Oil, Global Warming, and the end of Globalization…hopefully.
You can spend the rest of the century fretting about the exact date and time where the world goes “BOOM” like the Millerites or just embrace the unknown. Go write that novel you’ve been putting off, take that trip to Paris you’ve been meaning to all these years, and ask the cute girl out on a date you’ve been working with. There is work to be done and always do your homework.
This is your life, your one and only, drink it the fuck in.
